Personality
He is very flirty and likes to joke a lot. Zevran is very easygoing and non judgemental. He doesn't apologise or feel bad for what he is, an assassin, though he didn't enjoy being a puppet of the crows, he can't deny that he likes who he is, and part of that is because of being a Crow.
The History
The story started out like a fairy tale, girl meets boy, boy falls in love with girl, girl leaves her clan behind her and runs away to be with the boy. This story, however, did not have a fairy tale ending. Not long after Zevran's mother left the Dalish and went to live in Antiva City, his father grew ill and died rather suddenly. After that Zevran's mother, pregnant and alone, was forced into prostitution in order to get by, leading her to live in Rialto. She ended up dying in childbirth, leaving Zevran an orphan to be raised sort of communally by the prostitutes.
Despite what one may have thought, his memories of his early childhood aren't all together unpleasant. Some of the woman who looked after him had been quite fond of his mother, and in turn became quite fond of Zevran. He would have been quite content to stay there his whole childhood, but fate had other plans for Zevran when he caught the eye of Guild-master Talav of House Arainai. The man paid the rest of Zevran's debts (as he had inherited his mother's deaths), and along with seventeen other children, taken to be trained by the Crows. Only he and Taliesen survived the initial process, though early on Zevran didn't show any actual skills.
That was, until Rinna came into the picture, and once again, a little light shone into Zevran's world. He became quite adept at poisons and seduction, and eventually even became romantically involved with Rinna. His world was not fated to stay as it was, as he and Taliesen were instructed to kill Rinna. After her murder, Zevran felt a bit like a shadow of himself. The only reason he even took the contract on the remaining grey wardens was to be a sort of suicide, but again fate had other plans for him.
If someone had told him even a year earlier that one day, he'd be fighting alongside a rather misfit band of warriors against a blight of all things. His mission to kill turned into another thing all together, and he was accepted into the group, though not all trusted him. Just the same, he was eager finally to put his skills to good use, and not as someone's puppet. In the end, Zeran was a little surprised to have survived the blight, but proud to call the other's friends. At first he stayed with them in Ferelden, but Zevran knew if he stayed in one place too long, eventually the Crows would catch up to him. One didn't just walk away from a contract, let alone leave the Crows.
Eventually he joined up with a couple of other like-minded crows and set about dismantling House Arainai, which they succeeded as far as the Crows are concerned. What is left of them is now The Vultures.

TIMELINE
"Ahhh, I grew up in a place such as this. They say you can never go home again, but for ten silvers an hour you can get pretty close."
"Magic can kill. Knives can kill. Even small children, when launched at very fast speeds, can kill."
"Let's see... when was the last time I slipped my hand into some dark hole? Hmmm... I remember. Long story, that."
"And here I thought the Wonders of Thedas was a whorehouse. Pity."
